Education and sport in schools
5
(P4) The standard sports and games that are used in schools are: gymnastics, invasion games, swimming, outdoor activities, striking games, fielding games and net and wall games. Most schools will try to apply at least 2 hours of PE per week. They will try and cover as many sports as possible through a year to get more children involved. PE in schools offers a way of children gaining confidence, communication, team work skills and a bigger interest in sport and activity. It also gives children a form of exercise and another way of applying rules.
(M4) Schools will try and cover a wide range of sports to try and get everyone involved in activity. If a school only did football because ¾ of the class wanted too, it would make the job easier for the teacher, it would make the majority of children happy, but it would exclude the other ¼ from activity. Without activity children can face serious health issues later on in life. If children do not enjoy PE at an early age then they will not carry on doing any activity when they are no longer required too. PE is important in schools to keep children fit and healthy but it also teaches them vital life skills such as communication and confidence. Without these skills children will struggle in later life at meeting new people to make friends when they split from their friends after school or college. A good school will cover a large range of activities that gets every child involved.
Sport in schools can also develop an interest in particular sports. It will help develop the skills of certain sports to children and it develop an interest. For children that want to get involved in a sport primary school is a good way of deciding which sport that is. The primary school will cover all the sports and the child will decide which one is the best for them. They may then go on to attend after school clubs that the school may or may not run to improve their ability further. Without this sport would not develop when all the current players retire from their chosen sport.
(D1) A short term effect of education and sport in schools is that the participation level of football and other sports will increase. If a school covers a large selection of sports then children will be able to experience all sports. There is then a bigger chance of them gaining an interest in a chosen sport. For example if a child enjoys football they will want to play it more and then they will go on to play football for their local teams. This gives them an active and healthy hobby to participate in. If children do not enjoy football then they can always choose to play for local teams in other sports. Most towns in the UK have a large range of clubs for children to participate in.
A long term effect of this is that the children will go on to live an active lifestyle. If they find PE interesting and they enjoy a certain sport they will not be afraid to do it in further education and they may carry on playing for local clubs. For example, most football players that are around today have played football since U8’s. They found an interest in the sport at this early age and because they enjoyed it so much they carried on through their lives till they were given the opportunity to turn a hobby in to a profession. PE in schools also teach the children confidence skills and will help prevent social exclusion. This is vital life skills that will be needed regardless of whether or not the child goes on to play the sport as a hobby.
This will all have a positive effect on the public area and parents of these children. If their child goes on to play sport as a hobby then they know their child is keeping out of trouble and going down the wrong path. Even if they do not go on to play sport their child will still be keeping active which will help keep them healthy. They will also be learning important skills that they can apply to their everyday lives and that will help them in future. If they go on to play the sport as a hobby then local clubs will become more popular because most children will want to do what their friends do. Therefore the club itself will become bigger and better. The public schools that teach the children PE and get them involved in all sports will also get a good reputation.
